Dear readers, today we are going to talk about Waldo, a new search engine.

In the last month we saw the weakness of Google during the decadent presentation of Bard, the AI that would have to compete with ChatGPT OpenAI, and the further decline in users was also caused by Bing, since always talking about Bing with the introduction of AI, chat, enhanced by ChatGPT, has managed for the first time to reach 100 million active users.

This shows that Google is replaceable, and this has caused Waldo to be created, in fact, in the last six months, this new search engine has sneaked onto the scene. Named after the popular game “Where is Waldo”, Waldo uses search indexes extracted from Google, Bing and others, but packs the results into a different type of interface that allows you to optimize your search with the click of a few buttons.

The company was officially launched with a Chrome extension six months ago, but now a more advanced version is also available as a standalone site. Like Duck Duck Go or Bing, launched in 2008 and 2009 respectively, Waldo wants a slice of the search engine market that Google monopolized long ago. (In December 2022, the tech giant held over 92% of the global market share). Once your query results are present, you can press “d” on the keyboard and Waldo will highlight all data points in your search. Press “a” and it will give you a preview of several paragraphs that you can expand and browse fragments of. Choose the “lens” and it will show you only the results of academic sources.

Ultimately, using Waldo is a bit like doing a Boolean search, but much more accessible. You can also take notes on a built-in notepad, then turn them into a full presentation with one click or export them to a Google document. (Compatibility with Notion and other programs will come soon).

Wohlstadter had Waldo’s idea after years of working at an on-demand research service company called Wonder, which he founded in 2012 and then left to start Waldo.

Unlike Google and other search engines that use algorithms to analyze and find the results most relevant to your query, Wonder defines himself as “your personal search assistant” and employs people who produce high quality research reports in no time. “We’ve done millions and millions of search hours,” says Wohlstadter, “and as we did all these millions of search hours, we realized that everyone relies on Google, but Google isn’t built for the job.”

Waldo says most users, and according to Wohlstadter, love the ability to search for datapoints and filter results based on the type of sources you want. Basically it allows you to quickly find reliable and fundamental information, but it could be useful for anyone.

For now, Waldo is free and has no collaborations with any other scheduled company, although on Waldo’s official website it is said that this search engine is used by people in some of the best consulting firms and financial institutions such as Unilever and Bloomberg and researchers from Stanford University. In the coming months, Wohlstadter predicts that some features, such as “X-rays” and datapoints, will become chargeable. The real question is whether you can find people who will spend money on something they’re not used to.

This is all about Waldo, a new search engine that is willing to take its niche, to a forthcoming article.
