TOP 5 FEATURES ADDED ON MACOS MONTEREY
Good morning dear readers of Tecnogalaxy, today we will see the top 5 additions on macos Monterey.
Your Mac will probably have warned you for some months now that there is a new software update ready. This is macos Monterey (also known as macos 12), the new version of Apple’s desktop operating system. This adds many of the features that have already been added on the iPhone or iPad with iOS or iPadOS 15.
How to download and install Monterey
Is your Mac compatible with the new operating system? These models support it:
- MacBook: beginning of 2016 and later
- MacBook Air: beginning 2015 and later
- MacBook Pro: beginning 2015 and later
- Mac Mini: Late 2014 and later
- imac: end of 2015 and later
- imac Pro: 2017 No Comments
- Mac Pro: Late 2013 and later
You can discover your Mac model by tapping the Apple icon in the top left menu bar and going to About this Mac.
If you’re upgrading from MacOS Sierra or later, you’ll need at least 26 GB of available storage to download and install Monterey. There is another step to take before installing the operating system: back up your Mac. You can do this by backing up your files with Time Machine or by storing your files in iCloud.
To download MacOS Monterey, click the Apple menu in the left corner of the display. Then click System Preferences > Software Update > Update Now.
TOP 5 FEATURES ADDED ON MACOS MONTEREY
Now that your system is properly upgraded to Monerey let’s see what are the 5 best features added on macos Monterey.
FACETIME UPDATE
MacOS Monterey enriches video calls with new visual and audio features in FaceTime (most of which is accessible through the Control Center in the upper right corner of the menu bar). For example, you can apply Portrait mode to your calls, adding a blurry effect to the background to hide the messy rooms. A new grid view also simplifies the simultaneous display of all call participants. More importantly, you can invite friends who use Android or Windows devices to join a call by sending them a link, but they will need to use Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge or any other browser.
When it comes to audio, you can switch between voice isolation mode and wide-spectrum microphone mode. Voice isolation works best when you are in noisier environments, because it tries to block most of them. Wide Spectrum, on the other hand, collects all the noise of the environment.
If you have a MacBook with M1 power and any of the latest generation airpods, you can also take advantage of Apple’s new space audio. During group FaceTime calls, you will hear people’s voices based on their location on the screen grid; it is Apple’s attempt to make the call more natural, as if people were in the room with you.
INSTANT TEXT
If you have iOS 15 or iPadOS 15, you might already be familiar with Live Text. Using the rear camera on these devices, you can highlight and copy text through the viewfinder. Is there text in a photo? Just select it with your finger. You can then paste this text into apps like Notes and imessage. Each time it recognizes a phone number or address, it will give you the ability to call the number or enter the address in Maps, with 2 simple taps on the screen. It doesn’t work with your Mac’s front camera, but you can still use it to copy text into photos and paste it elsewhere.
Shortcuts
Originally available in iOS and iPadOS 13, the Shortcuts app is now available on Mac. You can use preinstalled shortcuts like “take a break” or “open Shazam” or access the ones you’ve already created on your iPhone and iPad. For example, we can now access the shortcut “Turn off TV” for Apple TV, “Heat the kettle to 100 degrees Celsius” for my smart kettle directly on your MacBook. You can also create your own via the desktop editor.
Notice
With the handy Quick Note feature, accessing the Notes app is much easier. Simply move the cursor to the lower right corner or hold down the control + Q keys to open a quick note. You can insert links, photos and more. It’s great for quickly annotating something. MacOS Monterey is also compatible with the new collaborative notes feature introduced in iOS and iPadOS 15. Similar to Google Docs, you can add people to a specific note where they can edit and make changes.
GROUPS OF SAFARI CARDS
You can create groups of tabs that will not only organize all those open tabs, but also make the Safari window more tidy. Using the Tab Group button, you can assign a name to each group based on categories like “Shopping” or “Work” and then add tabs to each. The feature syncs across all of your Apple devices, so you’ll always have your groups of tabs with you.
This is all about the best features added to MacOS, in a forthcoming article.
